There are colons after &#8220;however&#8221; as in &#8220;, however;&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might automatically eliminate those, thinking colons belong before &#8220;however&#8221; as in &#8220;; however.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That seems logical. It isn&#8217;t always the answer to eliminate, however; below I explain why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The house had an outdated kitchen. The location was excellent ______ it sold within a few days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Choices:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A. , however,<br>B. ; however,<br>C. , however;<br>D. ; although<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2705 <strong>C is correct.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-here-s-what-s-happening\"><strong>Here\u2019s what\u2019s happening:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>First clause:<\/strong><br><em>The house had an outdated kitchen.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Second clause:<\/strong><br><em>The location was excellent, however;<\/em><br>\u2192 Here, <strong>&#8220;however&#8221; modifies this second clause<\/strong>, showing contrast with the outdated kitchen.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Third clause:<\/strong><br><em>it sold within a few days.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Mentally, move the &#8220;however&#8221; to the beginning of the clause. That&#8217;s where it usually appears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Original<\/strong> <strong>choice C<\/strong>: The house had an outdated kitchen. The location was excellent<strong>, however<\/strong>; it sold within a few days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Move the however in choice C: <\/strong>The house had an outdated kitchen. <strong>However<\/strong>, the location was excellent; it sold within a few days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this construction, <strong>&#8220;however&#8221; contrasts the excellence of the location with the outdated kitchen, not with the house selling quickly.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When <strong>&#8220;however&#8221; appears within a clause<\/strong> (whether in the beginning, middle or end of the clause), it logically contrasts <strong>the clause before the however.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not setting up contrast with the next clause \u2014 it\u2019s <strong>resolving the prior contrast.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2705 Example structure:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Clause 1. Clause 2, however;<\/strong> (contrasts clause 1). <strong>Clause 3<\/strong> (continues story, not contrast).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Alternatively:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Clause 1.
